tekom at Vienna 2019

Welcome to Austria Center Vienna

Most of the attendees found themselves in the middle of a breast cancer conference because we didn't realize tekom conference took place in the basement...
However, having a look at the surrounding of the conference center (which sits on an island in the middle of the Danube river) isn't too bad either:

Welcome to the United Nations in Vienna ("UNO City"), in the immediate neighboorhood of the conference center:

Or let's have a look at some ordinary skyscrapers:

Or at a not so ordinary one - meet Donau City Tower, with a height of ~250 m:
(mind the Danubian waves on the facade)

Springtime in Vienna:

But now let's take a little time travel:

Welcome to Schönbrunn Palace, the "summer house" of the Emperors of Austria-Hungary (here the modest garden front, as opposed to the cours d'honneur on the other side, nowadays used to give honor to the myriads of tourists like me):

Same facility, seen from the Gloriette hill:

The Gloriette building (the Emperor's house on the hill):

... and a little detail making the stairs look less boring:

Some tiny hideaway in the park of Schönbrunn palace:

Let's take a walk now through the streets of Vienna:

Welcome to the Prater, a permanent funfair established in the late 18th century:

The Ferris wheel (~20 € per person and circulation; well, I found some cheaper and higher viewpoints):

For example, this one - view down on UNO City seen from the Donauturm on the Danube island:

But after all, friends, we are technical writers, right? So let's celebrate this highlight of an instructional text at Central Cemetery railway station:

Always motivate your guidance, otherwise the consequences may be fatal and final:

BTW, Austria exposes certain linguistic peculiarities w/r to the variant of the German language (both spoken and written). Austrians tend to call things by their name (aka "Tell it like it is") as the following picture illustrates: If you've never heard of a "Mistplatz" before, get yourself informed by the Vienna Municipal Authorities. Obviously, in Austria, there's no room for streamlined, politically correct euphemisms that have become such a pain in German language as we practice it in Germany. Felix Austria!

On the other hand (thereby getting back to the Zentralfriedhof thing), there's no city on earth like Vienna that knows how to celebrate death. Look at this cute and neat cemetery chapel (no, it's not the dome of Vienna):

When inside, look up, kneel down:

But as long as we're still alive, let's go to Grinzing to a Heurigen restaurant:

And now: Time for shopping - a mall in Vienna:

Finally - some of the classical highlights showing the beauty of Vienna:

Not a palace - this used to be the home of the Vienna fire brigade:

An insurance company:

Just another sleepy dream of a building:

Can't miss it - Fiaker (btw: it smells...):

Austrian Ministry of Science:

The Vienna city palace of the Duke of Liechtenstein (guess the street name: It's Bankgasse...):

The Staatsoper:

In the basement: The Bank of China. In the top floor: A flat for sale for you and me, ~2000 m², room height 7,5 meters, waterfall down the walls included, to be had for ~30 million Euros...

Wiener Musikverein (I spent two days there ;-):

Hotel Sacher (where I couldn't reside for unknown reasons; at least, I got my piece of Sachertorte):

And - finally - let's finish with an ultimate statement on sports that I found in the new Museumsquartier and to which I can really relate:
